Delhi Weather and Your Clothes: The Season-by-Season Laundry Guide
Delhi Weather and Your Clothes: The Season-by-Season Laundry Guide
Delhi doesn't do mild. It does 45-degree summers. It does monsoons that leave everything smelling like it sat in a bucket for a week. It does winters so dry that static electricity follows you everywhere.
Each season does something specific to your clothes — and each one demands a slightly different approach to laundry. Here's what you need to know.
Summer (April – June): The Heat and the Sweat Problem
Delhi summers are punishing. The combination of heat and sweat means your clothes need washing more frequently — and standard washing often isn't enough to fully remove sweat odour that's set into the fabric.
What happens:
- Sweat salts and body oils work into cotton fibres and create persistent odour even after washing
- Light-coloured clothes yellow at the collar and underarms
- Synthetic fabrics trap heat and smell faster
What to do:
- Wash cottons and linens frequently — they're breathable and handle washing well
- Don't leave worn clothes sitting in a pile. The longer sweat sets, the harder it is to remove
- Pre-treat yellowing collars before washing
- For delicate summer fabrics — georgette dupattas, cotton silk kurtas — use a professional laundry service to avoid aggressive washing that damages the weave
Bethel tip: Our pre-treatment process targets sweat stains before the wash cycle, so collars and underarms come out clean — not just masked.
Monsoon (July – September): The Mildew Trap
Monsoon laundry is its own particular misery. High humidity means clothes take forever to dry indoors — and clothes that don't dry fully develop mildew, leaving a musty smell that can be very difficult to get out once it's set.
What happens:
- Clothes hung indoors in 85% humidity take 24–48 hours to fully dry
- Partially-dry clothes develop mildew within hours
- The smell transfers to your wardrobe and other clothes
What to do:
- Never leave washed clothes bunched together — spread them out for maximum airflow
- If you're using a dryer, run a complete cycle rather than partial drying
- Don't leave damp clothes in a washing machine or bucket — move them to hanging immediately
- Woollens and heavy fabrics are especially risky during monsoon — have them professionally laundered and fully dried before storing
Bethel tip: Our equipment dries clothes fully and evenly. During monsoon, many of our customers specifically switch to professional laundry because drying at home becomes genuinely difficult. No half-dry, no mildew.
Winter (October – February): Heavy Fabrics and the Storage Problem
Delhi winters mean sweaters, shawls, blankets, and heavy woollens come out of storage — and then need to go back in. How you store them at the end of winter determines whether they're wearable next year.
What happens:
- Moths target woollen fibres — especially on stored, unwashed garments
- Winter clothes that are stored with body oils or light soiling attract insects and yellowing
- Heavy blankets and razais are difficult to wash at home and often end up under-washed
What to do:
- Always wash woollens before putting them away for summer — never store worn but "not that dirty" items
- Use breathable fabric bags for storage, not plastic, which traps moisture
- Heavy razais and blankets genuinely need professional washing — home machines can't handle the weight properly
- Dry woollens flat, never hanging, to prevent stretching
Bethel tip: We handle heavy winter wear — blankets, duvets, razais, and woollen coats. At the start or end of winter, we can collect, wash, and return them ready for storage.
Year-Round: The Rules That Never Change
Regardless of the season:
- Check care labels. They exist for a reason.
- Sort by colour and fabric weight — don't mix everything together
- Don't overfill the drum — clothes need space to actually get clean
- When in doubt about a fabric, use a professional. Replacing a good kurta costs more than a laundry service.
